Professional Photographer of the year awards 2012

ppoty 2012

Big awards on Thursday.  I have the shot below up for an award in the Location Flash Category.  One winner from all the categories gets the prestigious title of Professional Photographer of the year.  I lucked in last year and won the Portfolio title.  The shot below is of William D Drake of the Cardiacs.  I planned the shot in advance.  He is a totally eccentric character which I was determined to get across in the portrait.  I stuck a Lumedyne head inside my flash brolly with the battery pack hidden from view and told William to ignore everyone walking across the bridge and just think about the shot.  It was rammed with people and the sky was turning darker by the minute so we shot fast.  William is simply jumping up in the air as I count him in to the shot. 3-2-1 Do it again.  We must have done it 15 times until we got a shot that worked.  The background I underexposed by about a stop and a half to esentuate the greyness of London and make St Pauls Cathedral stand out.

Awards ceremony is in Cheltenham on Thursday night.  Fingers crossed!
